{"id":1748,"date":"2015-05-27T12:00:20","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T16:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/davidmcrampton.com\/?p=1748"},"modified":"2021-06-07T18:45:13","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T22:45:13","slug":"fitness-toys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidmcrampton.com\/?p=1748","title":{"rendered":"Fitness Toys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been replaced by a pod person.&nbsp; That&#8217;s the only explanation.&nbsp; Wait, is 38 too young for a mid-life crisis?<\/p>\n<p>I woke up one morning and re-installed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myfitnesspal.com\/\">MyFitnessPal<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/cell-phones\/apple-iphone-5s.html\">my phone<\/a>.&nbsp; I mean, sure, I&#8217;ve been doing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/davidmcrampton\/sets\/72157646473408243\">morning walks<\/a>, and enjoying the hell out of them.&nbsp; But I have always maintained that tracking what I eat sucks the joy out of eating.&nbsp; Worrying about numbers, worrying about whether or not I&#8217;m hitting some kind of goal, sends me into an obsessive depression cycle wherein all I can do is think about the numbers.&nbsp; The amazing, awesome, yummy food ends up being nothing but math.&nbsp; The joy of eating, of tasting, is gone.&nbsp; That&#8217;s how I always reacted.<\/p>\n<p>Always.<\/p>\n<p>And then I didn&#8217;t.&nbsp; I installed the app, tracked the food, and it still tasted just fine.&nbsp; I didn&#8217;t obsess.&nbsp; I added my weight, measured daily, to the list of tracked stuff.&nbsp; Nikki advised against it, but I wanted to see my daily fluctuation.&nbsp; I wanted to <a href=\"http:\/\/firefly.wikia.com\/wiki\/Main_Page\">collate data, as they say<\/a>.&nbsp; I turned on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/ios\/whats-new\/health\/\">pedometer function<\/a> of my phone, until I got birthday money from my parents.&nbsp; Then I went out and bought a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbit.com\/flex\">Fitbit Flex<\/a>, adding my sleeping patterns to what I was tracking.<\/p>\n<p>The momentum kept going (as momentum is wont to do).&nbsp; After a week of looking at my sleep patterns &#8211; or lack thereof &#8211; I dug out my year and a half old prescription for a new CPAP mask, took it in to my doctor, and had it updated.&nbsp; (I really want one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fundairing.com\/journal\/2015\/4\/30\/introducing-the-worlds-first-hoseless-cordless-maskless-battery-powered-cpap-device\">these<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>I get excited to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryobitools.com\/outdoor\/products\/details\/486\">my new lawn mower<\/a>, and to haul things around in the yard.&nbsp; I&#8217;m taking the kids out on evening walks ON TOP OF my solitary morning ones.&nbsp; They love it.&nbsp; I love it.&nbsp; Who am I?<\/p>\n<p>Is it that I&#8217;m playing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryobitools.com\/outdoor\/products\/details\/391\">toys<\/a>?&nbsp; Is it that I&#8217;m internalizing the big data component of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.krux.com\/\">work<\/a>?&nbsp; Am I having the healthiest mid-life crisis ever?&nbsp; Pod person?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not quite sure, but I&#8217;m going to keep going.&nbsp; I&#8217;m enjoying this and I&#8217;m feeling good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been replaced by a pod person.&nbsp; That&#8217;s the only explanation.&nbsp; Wait, is 38 too young for a mid-life crisis?
