The Explosive Child: A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children The Explosive Child: A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children by Ross W. Greene

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
This book was loaned to me in an effort to better understand my soon-to-be stepson and to understand myself. I was extremely cynical about the methods proposed in this book, but the author raised the same issues, and addressed them with respect and without sarcasm or dismissal. Definitely worth the read. I might suggest an addition to the already long title: “and Parents”

Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born (Graphic Novel) Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born by Stephen King

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
A faithful and quality interpretation of the beginning of Roland’s life, if not the beginning of the actual Dark Tower series, if ye kennit. It was so good, I asked for the next one for Christmas from my parents. I may be a thirty-something geek, but I’m not living in their basement. And I asked them anyway. :)

Powers: Definitive Collection Volume 1 HC Powers: Definitive Collection Volume 1 HC by Brian Michael Bendis

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Two human detectives work homicide in the Super Powers devision of the city’s police force. It started out as noir as I expected, took a snarky turn with the addition of the detective’s partner, and then added stupid LARPers.

LOVE. IT. Also, fear the dimension hoppers.

Popping up on radar for a moment

Kids
Changing dirty diapers has moved to the easier end of the scale. It’s when the human waste ends up on the -outside- of its intended receptacle that it becomes difficult.

Christmas shopping for the boys is done, and we’ve been out shopping for either that or the house nearly EVERY day of the week.

And we all know how much I LURVE shopping.

Hunter’s been with his Dad for the last few weekends, plus the Mondays and Tuesdays. I miss him a bunch. Aidan’s been clingy enough to make up for it, though. ‘s got PT for her hip, Aidan’s got a yearly checkup this week, and holy crap busy.

Netflix
Okay, so this is a classic. Like my not having read Dune (despite having seen both versions), not having seen Blade Runner plunked me into the “unread heathen” category of Science Fiction fan. Let alone having the cred to write. So, out of all of the different cuts and edits of the movie, I figured the “Final Cut” was the best. It being final and everything.

It’s likely that I wasn’t impressed because I’ve seen these tropes over and over and over again. Granted, this was the movie that originated them, but it wasn’t the first that had hit me, so it was the same-old same-old for me. I totally dug the noir aspects of the movie, the “more of the same” future that is shared by Firefly/Serenity, and the human/replicant love interest. I disliked the thuggishness of the main character, but I admired his tenacity. If I had seen it earlier in my life, it would have probably made more of an impact. Three stars.

This anime was just as psychotic as I remember it being. Eyebrows. Robots popping out of heads. Guitars as weapons. Sexual innuendo… er… more of a beating you over the head. Less of the innuendo. Factories that look like clothes irons that aren’t really factories. Other robots that look like hands. Eyebrows?! Three stars.

Job
Still only had two interviews. I have applied for nearly forty jobs. Still going. Working on another possibility. We shall see how that develops. Vagueness will continue until something concrete is developed.

I hope that everyone can stay sane this Holiday season. :)

While Waiting While Waiting by George E. Verrilli

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
This was a quick and simple book that explained a bunch of the process of the alien podling’s development inside of the host female’s abdomen.

Um. I mean, the baby’s development in the uterus, and the resulting effects on the mother. Definitely covered a list of do’s, don’ts, and suggestions. Since I’m a total newb at this, and my partner is not, I’ve been able to ask her the questions that this book raised.

So, it wasn’t complete, but it wasn’t written to be. It was a very good introductory book, and prepped me for more in-depth books that are to come.

Stargate Atlantis: Season 4, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, and Stargate Continuum

What would happen if the Atlantis writers decided to make their season a little darker, a little more dramatic, and a little more gritty? You’d get this season. Unfortunately, the season finale was formulaic, predictable, and once again, abusing time travel as a patch in the plot instead of the physics-shattering craziness that it actually is. I really dig the plot with Tayla and her baby… it pulls the heartstrings, it raises serious questions about the team’s future, and makes everyone confront just how risky that galaxy is. And then someone decided to PHONE IN the finale. The finale is the only reason that this season didn’t get five stars. It got four.

You can get a Master’s degree in the interplay of Western and Japanese philosophies, or you can watch this movie. I’m estimating that at least 75% of the dialogue was subtitled in quotes, and I really have no idea who the characters were quoting. The action was top-notch, the appearance of the Major was excellent, and once my mind wrapped around the philosophy involved, I was verrah happy to have watched it. It really is taking the questions and the action and what the world is becoming in the first movie, and elevating it to the next level. Four stars.

Disappointing is all I can really say about this one. Over-milked the time travel business, which they had really already done in Season 10. Can you over-milk something that’s been over-milked? My guess is no, and it really showed up in this. STOP ABUSING TIME TRAVEL. NAO PLZ. I’m really hoping that the writing quality either goes back up for these movies, or they stop writing them. Otherwise, the SG-1 crew has jumped the shark, in my oh-so-humble opinion. Three stars.

Battlestar Galactica: Season 3, American History X, and This is England

Character death? Did someone say character death? Did someone let George R. R. Martin into the writer’s room? My guess is that yes, he was there, talking about football and when to destroy the dreams and potential of whichever particular character that you were just starting to like.

Make no mistake, I loved this season, and that’s part of why. I really dislike kid gloves, and Season 3 takes off the kid gloves, takes off the adult gloves, and peels off three layers of skin from the hands. And then, at the very end, it chops off your hands, slaps you with them, and then takes you out to a movie and buys you dinner.

There’s not much that I can say about this season without spoilerizing it. I’ll just leave this little teaser for you. At least four of the last five Cylons are revealed. Five stars. And I have it on good authority that Season 4 is even -more- screwed up. I can’t wait!

I’d never pictured the dude from Fight Club, Edward Norton, as a tough guy. Really, as a muscley guy at all. And as a skinhead? Woah. This movie was truly amazing, and nailed nearly every single thing I look for in a movie. I was caught up, I was emotionally involved and invested in the characters, and the ending wasn’t rushed and didn’t take the easy way out. I really didn’t expect to see the girl from The Craft there, either. If you get the chance, see this movie. Five stars.

Apparently, I was on a bit of a skinhead run. Maybe I’m trying to figure out my cousin. Who knows? This one was recommended to me a while back, but I don’t remember who did it. This one’s got a bit more of an innocent cast to it than the other, due to the age and circumstances of the main character. Again, I was invested in the characters, and it was a great film. You could tell that it was an independent film, but the actors were amazing. The actor that played Tommy in Snatch was another surprise showing. That man can play really diverse roles. The ending was inevitable, but not labored. Four stars.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: Book 1

This is something that I’ve wanted to see for a while, after seeing it show up in ‘s journal, and then seeing how deep Hunter is into it. So, I added it to my queue. I mean, c’mon, I dig cartoons, even pseudo-Anime like this, right?

*blink*

So, I finish with the first DVD, and all I can think is, “How cool would Transformers have been if they’d paid that much attention to the quality of the animation? The frame rate? The art? The physics? The way bodies work? Just watching the benders go through their various katas (is that the correct word?), and start understanding what kind of motions are related to which element, and wow, that really -does- make sense.

It’s difficult to let the next season make its progression through my queue. Four stars.
