This may take some of you by surprise…

I’m going home.

I’m smiling, I’m enjoying myself, I’m relaxed, and happy. All it took for me to enjoy California was the decision to leave it.

I feel crappy, at the same time, about letting people down. Mike at Yahoo, , , . Sometimes, I guess that you’ve got to let people down to do the things that you need to do to be happy.* Still, I’m sorry.

I resigned today from Yahoo, and will be booking a flight back to Detroit Metro for as soon as is 1) reasonably priced and 2) convenient for my parents to pick me up. I do have other prospects, so I won’t be out of commission for very long.

I know that every time I write about writing, I’m slashing the chances of actually getting down to it. I’m doing it anyway. I have the next portion of Adam’s Name to edit, and I’ve re-read what I’ve got for The Glass Crown. (OMG CAN HAZ REWRITE KTHXBAI) I’m at a spot, I think, where I can pick up and keep going. Don’t have a heart attack, . You know, I’ve not been very nice to Chuck, and I really think that should continue. I think that Caroline and the Right Hand should get some torment, too. :)

*The irony here hasn’t escaped me.

Weekly Word Count

Two new Short Fiction additions to the site since the last Word Count.

Two Vampires : This piece has been through more revisions than any other, even The Remembrance. For a while, it was intended to be part of the Adam’s Name storyline, but I think it stands better on its own. Nicholas and Megan, two vampires who are beset upon by a tenacious hunter, follow homespun prophecy across the country, searching for their maker.

Adam’s Name – Friends Forever : Here, in a basement bar in downtown Detroit, Adam continues with his friends in their alcoholic Olympics. While trying to run from his memories of Susan and Solomon, he is once again set upon by the strange.

As always, constructive criticism and abject praise is always welcome. :)

EDIT: I forgot the linky goodness! The short fiction page is here: http://www.davidmcrampton.com/fiction.php

Weekly Word Count

Spax is up! From the site

“Haven’t you ever wondered what it would be like to have a spastic artificial intelligence develop in a lab and then roam the ‘net? What would happen if he learned the English language, manners, and the nuances of personality by parsing forums and newsgroups, all at once?Wouldn’t it be cool if he could master concepts like sarcasm, but speaking in the first person was too complicated for him to handle?Everyone, meet Spax. He is the King of Wales.”

I hope that you enjoy it. :)

Weekly Word Count Plus

It’s been a while since a Weekly Word Count, and I apologize.

I’ve just submitted a piece about Spax to for final editing and posting to the free fiction section of my site. I’ll let you all know when that goes up. I also have a vampire story that should be going up sometime next week. I’ve gotten some more words down on The Glass Crown, but that is slow going, as always.

There’s a lot of life going on right now. Also, some Myst. :) I have taken some of your suggestions to heart (particularly the sci-fi) in some new works, and I’m thinking of tackling a dimensional rift and a steampunk Aztec empire. Two different stories, though. Heh.

As always, input is welcome. I’m thinking of starting a discussion in the Google Group about one or two of the free bits that I’ve got up. Hop on over there if you’re interested… I won’t be sad if you beat me to the punch.

Weekly Word Count

So, I’m moving my Weekly Word Count updates from the Google Group to here. The group has turned into an announcement list, instead of a discussion group, and I’d like to nudge it back in the other direction.

There are now two pieces available on the Short Fiction page: Todd and Motor City Mafia. The latter has gone through a major revision and now has a completely new ending.

I’ve submitted a work called Two Vampires to http://www.ideomancer.com as they apparently need more guys to submit. At least, according to . And she happens to read slush for them, so I have a feeling that she’s right. :)

Also, I highly recommend checking out http://xmitter.cc and its snippets of goodness. Both the refined stuff (xmitter) and the source ficlets (cobweb) are available via RSS feed, as well.

Also, way to go New Hampshire!

Pixel-Stained Technopeasant

If I were doing this as part of the Pixel-Stained Technopeasant movement, I’d be a little late. Instead, I’m seeing it as a smart move that I’m hoping my readers will eat up.

I’m putting my shorter works up for free on my web site. I’m also putting up developing works, that will be more than short works when they’re finished. I’ve already posted the Todd story, which is part of Dr. Celestine’s of Souls. Today, I’ll be posting “Motor City Mafia”, which is the first chapter of Adam’s Name.

You can go to the Short Fiction area of my website to click through to these. If you’re interested in an ebook (rtf or txt) format, leave ma comment here about which format you’d like made available, and I’ll put it up.

I’m only asking one favor in return. (Always a catch!) If you like what you read, let someone else know who might enjoy it. Shoot them a link. :)

Timing

Why is it, when I’ve taken my time to shower, brush my teeth, prepare a breakfast at home, enjoy some television while eating, hang out with the dog, get to the coffee shop, set up, and start feeling in the mood to pull out the notebook and write…

… the clock interrupts and I must go. Or think about going. Or figure out when I need to go, and exactly how much time I’ve got left and oh my god how am I going to cram all of the words into that amount of time and…

and and and or or or but but but

I’m putting words on paper, but it’s so…. slow. I keep needing breaks and changes of scenery and oh, that car is shiny, and I called Mom for Mother’s Day (but got voice mail) and and and and.

I’m putting words on paper, but it’s more like my outline is shoving my characters into this structure that doesn’t really have an end, and is only just getting to a sort of middle thing. It feels like I’ve forgotten who they are, or they’ve forgotten how to talk to me, or or or or.

I’m putting words into the intertubes, but my lap is getting warm. When it’s charging, my laptop runs pretty freakin’ hot. My SETI@home Graveyard project may yet come to fruition. I’m surprisingly excited about that. As it is, I’m helping a friend test resource allocation limits on the virtualization software he’s running on his colo box by running the BOINC software. Ones and zeros!

I’ve got to relax and listen, so that I can put more words on paper. I’ve -got- to. And that’s part of the reason that I can’t relax. Kernel Panic – oops!
