Old tech love affair.

So, I have a class in fifty minutes here in the Eppley Business Complex, and I’ve been exploring the newer building for a computer lab. I’d completely forgotten to note the room number. SMRT.

So, I find a lab on the first floor (after having entered the building on the ground floor) that’s filled with old Dell machines. I’m talking Dimension 4100’s, before they switched from the beige cases to the black ones. No USB. 5 1/4″ expansion bays filled with headphone jacks with knob volume controls. Keyboards that give you that clackitty-clack. This only fuels my desire for the old Pismo laptop.

And now that I’ve begun to listen to the third season of the Tales from the Afternow, he’s talking about old tech, and his love for old tech.

Oh ye of little fai… OW!! That was my FACE!!

So, this whole deciding to purchase a new laptop thing… way out of my ideal set. I’m all about re-use, and defeating the consumer within me. At the same time, there are specific things that I want in a laptop. The ability to use wireless connectivity (PCMCIA expansion I’m okay with). The ability to run OS X (which means it’s an Apple laptop with built-in USB). Really, that’s it.

So, I’m sitting on the can, where I do all my good thinkin’, and I’m blindsided by my own dorkitude. A later-generation Powerbook G3. Eminently upgradable, built-in USB, and even firewire on some models. Very friendly for wireless, especially with OS X.

AND IT’S MY FAVORITE COLOR. That’s the reason I never put a lot of effort into looking for a clamshell iBook. I never really dug the way they look. ‘Course I’m vain. Even my dog is goth. Heh.

So, lo and behold, what do I find?

ME WANTY!!!

Of course, I can’t afford the buy it now price until June, and it may never reach its reserve. Perhaps I should email the seller about negotiations if and when the reserve is not met. Either way… ME WANTY!! Heh.

Printer annoyance solved.

I finally found the little checkmark to turn off the “fast printing” option on my Epson in the Mac configuration. I had found it on the PC forever ago.

I had breakfast for dinner and it was wonderful. I picked up a Robert Jordan and a Neil Gaiman novel on my Border’s gift card. There’s 57 cents left and they wouldn’t give me the cash. They handed the card back to me. FOR FIFTY-SEVEN CENTS. Goddamn Borders.

I also got a new printer cartridge, finally. I didn’t need one in the TWP because let me use his printer for everything.

Okay, time to put away laundry.

Too many cords.

I found the missing power strip from the move. I also have the APC three-row power strip that I got for Christmas. Total geekgasm as far as a power strip goes. APC’s guarantee and quality for a simple power strip. Anyway, I have determined that I have an insane amount of cords, and should probably wall mount my power supplies.

However, I will need to make room for a third desk and computer here in the mid-to-near future. I’m not even thinking about the station I was gifted with at xmas that currently resides at ‘s house. Bah, that one should stay there for visitation purposes, at least. ;)

I also want to mount my Altec Lansing satellite speakers and subwoofer in a way that allows everyone in the computer room, no matter what desk you’re sitting at, to enjoy -both- sides of the stereo music. I should clearly call ‘s brother about this. Not to mention my VCR that won’t get or display video properly in my mess of an entertainment system.

Gah. Tired. Sleep now.

Apple Geekery

The beta trial for iChat AV is done. I need to purchase Panther if I want iChat AV now. I’m considering it, because of the improved Finder and font management as well as licensed iChat AV.

The new finder looks suspiciously like gnome’s file browser for RedHat. I’m guessing that it’s similar across the board, as far as distros go, but why couldn’t Apple just do that right off the bat? Heh.

Okay, my Apple geekery is done… FOR NOW! MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
