Thoughts From the Day Job

Holy wow, someone gets it.

Horoscope for 2 Dec 2009:
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “Dear Rob: Last night my son and I were star- gazing. When we focused on the constellation Cassiopeia, an owl started hooting. Then a brilliant shooting star zipped by as a huge bat flew right over our heads. Was this a bad omen? Bats are creepy — associated with vampires. And in Greek mythology Cassiopeia got divine punishment because she bragged that she and her daughter were more beautiful than the sea god’s daughters. But I don’t know, maybe this blast of odd events was a good omen. Owls are symbols of wisdom and shooting stars are lucky, right? What do you think? Are we blessed or cursed? -Spooked Taurus.” Dear Spooked: The question of whether it’s good or bad luck is irrelevant. Here’s what’s important: You Tauruses are in a phase when the hidden workings of things will be shown to you — the mysterious magic that’s always bubbling below the surface but that is usually not visible.

First revision of the cover for the Todd stories is AWESOME. I shall nibble on my fingernails during its resizing.

Thoughts from Work

I’m feeling ganged up upon by PHP and MySQL. I’m THIS close to de-friending them on LJ and Facebook. Take that!

Hard to write on your lunch break when you leave your laptop at home, take a pen and notebook, and then drop the pen between the wall and the booth. Yeah, that one’s gone. *headdesk*

Why do half of Facebook Notes lose formatting when viewed through the RSS feed? Not liking the wall ‘o text.

Thanksgiving Weekend

I give thanks for my family. I give thanks for my ability to support them in this ridiculous economy. I give thanks that I still have my health and my sanity. I give thanks for the opportunities that I have had, continue to have, and that my family has. I give thanks for a wife who supports me, thinks of me, and cares about me. I give thanks for three sons, all of whom likely see me as a better man than I am. I give thanks for two parents who still see me for all that I can be, and a brother who is, as Hunter put it, awesome.

I give thanks for everyone and everything in my life. Also, for leftovers.

Aside from a ridiculous amount of delicious homemade food, including a deep fried turkey, much nerdery was had on Turkey-day. I learned about the differences between .dmg and .iso (not much) and between compressed and uncompressed .dmg (quite a bit). I helped to pull a shaved kitten worth of cat hair and dust out of a laptop. Never got around to working on the server, but that’s fine. I was shown a Linux distro that’s meant to be a router/firewall combo. Just all kinds of geekishness going on.

I am -so- close to having the Todd story go to print. SO CLOSE, I tells ya. I’m on pins and needles just thinking about it.

I’m trying out EVE Online, and am finding myself just as frustrated with the crashing and lagging as I was with Myst Online. Being immersed in the story will make up for a lot. So far, the technical difficulties have outweighed the benefits. So, I unpacked Myst IV and Myst V, set them on the shelf next to Nikki’s Everquest II box, and popped Myst III: Exile into the PS2.

If I’m going to start gaming again, why would I ignore the ones I’ve already purchased?

Thoughts from Work

Wordy wordy word words.

Now that I’m feeling more coherent, I’m having a harder time dealing with words. Strange.

Yesterday, I put The Remembrance up for free download. Instead of hosting it myself, I decided to do it through Lulu, since they offer that service free of charge. Don’t know yet how I’ll end up tracking the downloads, since I’m pretty sure that they don’t count “$0.00” downloads as sales. You can find the link here.

If words start coming to me over lunch, I’ll be writing them down on paper. If not, I’ll be fixing dead links in the writery web site.

So, yeah, the dead links are all fixed, as far as I can see. If you find any, feel free to drop me a line and let me know.

After spending some of my lunch hour pondering why environment (both time and place) seem to impact my creativity so much, I shouldn’t really be surprised at my horoscope.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In the beginning of his career, poet Linh Dinh loved to stay up late and write, sometimes riding a creative surge till dawn. The power of the darkness unleashed a stark fertility. He was free to think thoughts that were harder to invoke during the bright hours when hordes of wide-awake people were pouring their chattering thoughts out into the soup. Dinh’s habits changed as he aged, though, in part because he got married and chose to keep more regular hours. But his early imprint has stayed alive inside him. “Now I can write at any time of the day,” he says, “because I always carry the night inside of me.” In accordance with your astrological omens, Taurus, I’m making that your prescription for the coming week: Carry the night inside you during the day.

Where did the fiction go?

In visiting the nearly-complete WordPress version of my Writery site (where you may be reading this very post!), you may notice a distinct lack of links to my fiction. Probably because it’s not there.

I am the first to admit it – I have limited WordPress-fu. What I will likely do is create a category for Fiction posts, and then create a page that shows only posts within that category. I’m hoping to find a way to limit the post list that shows up by default to that category as well.

In the mean time, I’ve posted some links to some new-ish and some old-ish stuff over on the Google Group. There’s an announcement coming up regarding The Remembrance, which I will make as soon as I finish fixing the dead links from the website update.

So tempting to log into Google Chat from my Gmail interface.

More words down on paper on my lunch break.  Once again with the not much, but hooray for regularity!  I’m hoping

Horoscope:

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “Dear Rob: I’ve read horoscope columns written by many astrologers, and yours is the only one that’s not prejudiced against at least one of the signs. You really do treat everyone equally. You play no favorites. But that’s exactly the bone I have to pick with you. I’m wondering if you’ve got a passion deficiency or something. It seems abnormal not to display a hint of bias now and then. -Suspicious Taurus.” Dear Suspicious: My own birth chart includes elements of both Taurus and Libra. The Taurus part of me has strong feelings and deep passions, while the Libra part of me is fair-minded and well-balanced. They’ve worked out a synergistic arrangement that allows me to maintain my equilibrium as I feed my intensity. I recommend this approach to you right now.

I think that my moon sign is Libra.  Huh.  Why do I have such a hard time with finding balance?  Is my Taurus set to override?

Thoughts from Work

A supervillain guards my desk.  Watch out.

More words today.  About the same output.  I got into gear faster, though.  I started feeling the story again, and seeing the scene in my head.  With the zone that I got into, I could have written for hours, I think.  This is good news.

My elbows are being scratched by the insides of my shirt sleeves.  This means that the air has gotten dry enough to require me to use moisturizer.  Who knew that I’d need lotion to forestall painful elbows?  (ZHWOM!)

I’m up to two medium Tim Hortons size cups of coffee per day, plus one to two Diet Mt. Dews.  I’m still yawning.  This may just indicate an increasing caffeine tolerance, which would be bad news.  Get here quickly, CPAP chin strap!

You posted to the what now?

So, to deal with Susan tiptoeing around in my brainmeats, I’ve gathered the posts that mention her together as a set of links and posted it to the Google Group.  What Google Group, you ask?

http://groups.google.com/group/davidmcrampton

I will likely be doing the same with Todd’s story shortly.  The entries are much easier to read in order than they are in Livejournal’s reverse chronological order.  Just a side-effect of shared fiction within a blog environment.

Anyway, if you’re inclined to read, please do.  If you’re inclined to comment, that’s also welcome.  Good night, all. :)
