Steven goodness.

Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll about Steven fiction. I’ve decided to follow your advice, but tweak it a bit.

I’m going to start this out weekly, but I’m not going to post it here. As a way to force myself to keep updating and working on the Dark Eternity web page, I’m posting the fiction on its front page. However, every time that the fiction gets updated, it will replace the fiction from the week before. That way, no easily browsed through archives, and hopefully interest will still be generated.

So, without further ado,

The fiction behind Steven: Issue 1, Chapter 1

Renting TV shows on DVD is strangely cool…

Stargate: SG-1, Smallville, and the 4400. Living with story addicts like myself brings interesting benefits in the realm of sucking away time. :)

The signing went pretty well, and I’m learning to greet everyone as they come in the door. Like said, she’s had more retail experience than I have, so it’s much easier for her. Since the books arrived at Everybody Reads, 6 have sold. I only know who three of them are, so it’s possible that some are selling to people that are just strolling through. How cool is that?

Also, I signed all of the stock at Everybody Reads, and we’re thinking of setting them up as the store at which to get signed copies of The Remembrance. Of course, I’m still happy to personalize them if you run into me on the street or wherever. :)

Right now, dishes are soaking in the sink, and I’m about to go and check to see if the mail has come yet. I’m still biting my nails for the Myst book to arrive.

Update: Mail doesn’t come on Sunday. Duhr.

To Post or not To Post

So, after completing another chapter of the Steven comic book, as far as the writing goes, I had a thought.

I’m a writer. I want people to be interested in my writing, yes? There’s a free teaser available for the novel, and we used that to generate interest in the book itself and in the signings.

So, why don’t I do something similar, here in my blog, with the comic? I leave it to you to decide. :)

Oh, yeah!

A couple of bits of good news that I forgot to mention here.

  • The Remembrance is on a shelf in a bookstore. Everybody Reads Books & Stuff has quite a few copies of my novel on its shelf. They’re in preparation for the signing at their grand opening (June 17th, I’ll be signing from 8PM to 10PM), but they’re available for purchase now, if you can’t make it to the signing.
  • I have a job interview. Tuesday at 5PM for that LiquidWeb position. Wish me luck. :)

Site Update and Distribution Goodness!

Several good bits of news about the book.

  • Website update! Thanks to , we’ve got a sweet new website up and running. This means that we’re finally ready for our marketing push. If you have any suggestions, feel free to send them our way. Also, feel free to come by to the…
  • Signing on June 17th! At Everybody Reads Books & Stuff, in Lansing. It’s right next door to Gone Wired. If you weren’t able to make it out to the Gone Wired signing, stop by for this one. My books will be on the shelves all day (and afterward), and I’ll be signing from 6 PM to 8 PM.
  • Distribution goodness! Right around the beginning of June, we’ll be going with Lulu’s global distribution package. This means that we’ll be listed through Ingram, which means that any bookstore will be able to order the novel. This also means that bookstores and libraries will have access to discounted copies of the book automatically. It’ll be going through a different printer, with more reasonable prices for what we’re trying to do. This means that we’ll be available everywhere, without having to go on the web to order!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): According to my reading of the astrological omens, you now have the best opportunity in a long time to promote yourself without turning into a manipulative huckster or soul-shrunken sell-out. At least temporarily, you have immunity from the phoniness that might infect anyone else who pushed her wares and services as hard as you can push them in the coming weeks. Please take advantage of this grace period to make sure the world knows how valuable you are.

Psycho Hosebeast

This Barbara Bauer person is still going about and threatening to sue people for perfectly legal activity.

Barbara Bauer is all whiny that she got listed on the “Twenty Worst Scammers” list when it comes to scamming people who want to become authors. Perhaps, instead, she should STOP SCAMMING WRITERS.

She’s now brought down a major forum for up and coming writers, called Absolute Write, by making irate phone calls and spewing retarded filth that she thinks are lawyer-speak. Posting this woman’s email address on the web, and thereby opening her up to spammers (same email address is readily available at her own website, BTW) does not make the company a spammer. Nor is spamming made illegal in the DMCA. Just… just… ARGH, JUST STOP SUCKING OUT MY INTELLIGENCE! You are SCAMMING people. You were CAUGHT. SUCK IT UP! ARGHQ@*)($&@WPODFJDS:8PWJF!one!:LKFDKSJ*STABSTABSTABBITYSTAB*

*breathe*

Barbara Bauer is much like those ignorant fools that would call in to tech support and demand that they wouldn’t have to pay their bills or that we have to Fix It Right Now because they know a lawyer. I don’t like Barbara Bauer or what she’s doing.

So I, like many other people, are linking Barbara Bauer to the aforementioned Twenty Worst Scammers list, thereby upping Google’s correlation between that list and her name.

Slacktivism? Maybe. Poetic justice? Certainly.

Looking for artists to work on a comic book.

This started out as the super-secret project. I’ve let it stall countless times. The novel is done and out there (preview and novel are both still available here). I have no classes over the summer. I have a part-time work schedule. The brunt of my focus now lands squarely on the comic book. On Steven.

The plan is to have a different artist working on each issue. Characters will be recognizable throughout, but I’d like to showcase the talent of as many artists as I can. Also, with seven different artists working on seven different issues at the same time, I can have (in theory) the full project completed before I release the first issue. None of that pesky lateness that small comic publishers have become known for.

This is what I’ve got up on the web site:

Dark Eternity Publications is now accepting artist’s submissions for our primary comic line: Steven. If selected to work on the comic, you will be paid, provided the issue that you work on makes a profit. This is a serious (and yet friendly – heh) venture, and deadlines will be involved. Please do not submit if you can’t complete projects within reasonable time frames.

Please send all submissions to dave at darketernity dot net.

This is the email that went out to the current artists, in an effort to kick all of us in the butt:

Hey, all. I’ve got the defibrillator paddles out, and I’m doing this once again.

The Steven Comic Book will happen. Now that the novel has been released, and signings are getting scheduled, I’m going to focus on my next project. And that is Steven. There are some things that I will need from all of you, and there are some things that I will want from you.

Here are the things that I need. If these don’t work out for you, and you need to bow out, I will not take offense, and I will not be hurt. :)

1 – Character sketches. I need sketches for the main characters that are in your chapters by Monday, 22 May 2006. I’ve requested this before, and am going to have to insist upon it as a first step. There is some marketing that I would like to be able to do, as far as the website and flyers are concerned, and the character sketches are essential to that.

2 – Respect for reasonable deadlines. I need you to be able to respond to reasonable deadlines. I need to know if they’re not reasonable, or if extensions are needed, but I need deadlines to be able to be deadlines.

3 – Communication. I’d be a liar if I said that I’d been even decent about this with regards to the comic. I’m going to need regular communication and updates and questions and input and etc. and further and whatnot. I promise to return this.

4 – Straightforward honesty. If you’re unsure about something, please let me know, If you need extensions on deadlines, let me know. If you think that I’m full of the most rancid cow shit EVAR, let me know. :) I want to minimize drAma and miscommunication from here on out.

Here are the things that I want. Totally optional, but exceedingly helpful.

1 – Feedback and suggestions for the website. http://www.darketernity.net/ Pretty self-explanatory. I want it to be -good-. I may be getting a professional web designer in the near future, but I’ll still need your input for what you think it should be.

2 – Adoring affection and excessive stroking of my ego. Or not. ;)

If bowing out is the way to go for you, please, just let me know, and unsubscribe from the Yahoo! Group. We’ll still be friends, I promise. Heh.

If you’re interested, or know someone who would be interested, please make contact. I’m itching to get this moving again.

There has just been so much.

said it well in her post.

Saturday night, at IPM, was a blast. The biggest surprise was Dgoe, who seemed to materialize out of a fine mist of Mountain Dew. Honestly, you can best get the gist of the party by listening to it live over at the website. Make sure that you snag the 05.06.2006 recording. Not so much of the drunken debauchery, but energy drinks and hugging and signing and clumsily reading and friends and awesomeness. Just amazing.

Sunday, at the Gone Wired Cafe, was also an amazing time. I ended up with about four hours of sleep, we drove back into Lansing (which means that drove back into Lansing), spent a few minutes at our house cleaning up a bit more, and then headed out to Clara’s to meet some family for brunch. From there, we went over and set up the signing at the cafe. After 2 hours, we were down to three books. Three minutes later, we were down to two. We called the people that had reserved books, but hadn’t paid for them, to see if they were coming. We sold out by 5:30.

I’m gonna say this again.

We sold out three and a half hours before the scheduled ending of the signing.

By the time 7 o’clock came around, we were starving, so we closed up shop and headed out for dinner. My apologies to and Scott Thom for this, but we stuck it out as long as we could. Benny went home and crashed, and I hung out with some peoples for the rest of the day.

For those that missed out, never fear. There is a likely, but unconfirmed, signing at Everybody Reads in June. Watch for it. :)
