I found out yesterday that Mac OS 10.x is not designed to share its printers to Windows. So, full Samba integration is lacking. Looks like I’m going to have to hit MSU Salvage/Surplus on Wednesday or Friday to pick up an old printer server module. I WILL network that printer, damnit! :)

Thank the gods that the printer has both USB and Parallel connections on the back.

Last night, the /absolute rightness/ feeling went away and has yet to return.

Off to work (not /real/ work) to plan the MABA thing for tomorrow. Maybe I can get some ideas from the mac techs there about sharing my USB printer to my Windows 98 SE box. Or hooking it up to the Windows box and seeing it from the iMac.

Frustrations with computers: I can’t get my Mac to see a USB printer shared on Windows 98 SE. I can’t get my Windows box to see the same USB printer shared on Mac OS 10.2.

I finally got the file sharing to work, at least. Yay for local mp3 sharing!

I may be doing tech geek work again. For money. As a job. Details are sketchy, it’s still a possibility.

The consulting company that I worked with before has hours again.

I’m also considering another option, but any info on that has to wait until I get a few details nailed down on workability. Nevertheless, I’m excited by it.

Lately, I feel as though I’ve been re-claiming my geekdom. I even considered putting Linux on my PC once I get it rebuilt. Then I realized that Linux won’t run Grapevine. Oh, well. When I get a newer PC with XP Pro on it, I’ll turn this machine into a Linux box. Maybe a firewall. That would be cool.

Well, that’s done. The hub is plugged in to the router. I have 3 ports of 100 base T goodness (2 in use) directly from the router, and 5 ports of 10 base T goodness, none of which are in use.

I find it amazing that in a house of two macs and one (non-working) PC, it’s the ancient PC that’s the graphics machine. Parallel port scanner, zip drive, and cd-burner. Oh yeah. Bottleneck at the motherboard, baby.

I think, when I get home from work, I will add the hub into the mix as far as my cable modem and router go, thereby doubling the number of computers that can connect to my apartment’s network.

I haven’t done something like this just because I could in a very long time.

There is a phrase from the trip to visit that was noted as “LJ-worthy”. For the life of me, I can’t remember it.

Routers are stupid-easy to set up via web interfaces. Well, at least Netgear made-for-cable-modem-and-DSL routers are. Now I’m going to have to see if I can tweak it and mess with it. Any suggestions, ?

Time to learn about RAID technology from Apple. Wonder if they’ve got anything I don’t know yet.

I know I got sleep last night. I got quality sleep. I’m still tired. This annoys me a great deal.

Rackmount servers are the shit, but why have one in a home? Better to use older machines for things like linux-based routers, and get a minitower or tower rack for the closet.

I think my lunch break will include much Robert Jordan.
